Hidden in Mahameru Arcopodo

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 ·

Two stone statues standing side by side in a silent forest at an altitude of 3002 meters above sea level. Both are facing north so that the eyes that stared everyone will point to Mahameru. This Arcopodo, cult statue of the highest on the island of Java, who had reportedly disappeared.

Statue was originally seen as a fairy tale "discovered" the late Edwin and Herman Norman O Mapala Lantang from the University of Indonesia in 1984. Two years later, Norman returned to the two statues and wrote his findings in Nature magazine Swara, "This statue is difficult to recognize because of the head and half his body missing."

Since then, the existence of the two statues was never again known. Herman, who tried to return two statues are in the ascent in 1999, failed to find. "On the path toward the statue, I found a gap in the sand and difficult to cross. When I fall into the abyss, so I decided not to visit the statue, "Herman wrote in Soe Hok-Gie book: Once Again, 2009.

Climb heading Arcopodo (2903 masl) is actually still exists today and is relatively easy reach of the Post Kalimati (2698 masl). However, Post Arcopodo known as the termination point prior to the peak of Semeru is just a plain covering approximately 20 square meters, surrounded by trees and a dozen inscriptions in honor of climbers who died. First, the inscription in honor of the student movement leaders, Soe Hok Gie, and colleagues, Idhan Lubis, also located here. However, in 2002, an inscription of two climbers who died on December 16, 1969 Semeru is moved to the top.

The climbers who are looking for two statues on the Post Arcopodo would be disappointed. That is what causes many people thought the statue was missing or moved. Initially, we also doubt the existence of Arcopodo. However, Ningot S, a member of Search and Rescue (SAR) Lumajang that guide the way, tells the story, about three years ago he found the two statues when searching for the missing climbers. Ningot mentioned characteristics, as described by Norman in his writings. "A statue of his head missing, such as beheading," said Ningot.

Hidden track
That morning, we had just come down from Mahameru (the peak of Mount Semeru). Legs still heavy going, even gasping breath. However, the desire to rediscover Arcopodo beat all sense of fatigue.

After a short break in the Post Arcopodo, we climbed back toward the top. Towards the limit of vegetation (3092 masl), we diverge to the east. In front stretches the valley, a frail old lava flow. Mahameru valley narrows into a towering arrogance, while about 20 meters to the bottom, in the almost perpendicular cliff into the estuary. We have to make a notch with a stick before it is planted on fragile land from sliding. Through one obstacle, another valley facing steeper. Power at its nadir, but by the same route, almost impossible. The only way forward had to crawl under the lush evergreen trees, along a thin ridge of the cliff.

When looking down, suddenly we were startled view of a pair of shoes left behind right on the edge of the abyss. Two shoes that look smooth it's like deliberately placed. It is unlikely that any climber who left the shoes in the middle of this field. We called several times, but no answer.
"These people lost track. Victims typically lose around here when it fell from the top. He went astray, down the valley, "said Ningot.

"Once in the valley, the exhausted climbers were desperate and usually difficult to find a way back. In fact, under the cliff is very steep, well-known is Blank 75, "tells Ningot.
However, anyone who leaves his shoes were? "Coming back later I'll invite a friend to investigate these shoes. We must bring the ropes and climbing equipment to get closer to the brink of the cliff, "said Ningot.

Through two more valleys, endless trips to the ridge of the cliff. In the grove of pine trees, two stone statues stood. In addition to the porous tin roof, and lay a ceramic floor, two statues were seen still as a photograph of the late Norman. The two statues were apparently still in place long ago. However, the popular ZIP Arcopodo passed climbers to the top of Semeru is apparently transferred. "Back roads climb past the two statues that. Around the year 1979, the track changed and no longer pass through, "said Sumarto (58), Stakeholder Pura Mandaragiri in Senduro, Lumajang. Sumarto not want to reveal the reasons that the transfer lines.Path to Arcopodo it was like a road guarded secrets of nature and those who worship
